Arp 131

This Astrobin Debut Object is a pair of magnitude 15 galaxies located in the constellation of Eridanus at a declination of -15 degrees. In his Arp catalog, Dr. Arp classified this object into the category of Elliptical and Elliptical-like Galaxies Close to and Perturbing Spirals.

The lower right bright yellow elliptical is LEDA 10561, located 290 million light years away. This object spans 40 arc-seconds in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 60,000 light years.

The upper left face-on blue spiral is LEDA 10564. No distance information is available for this object.

Without distance information available for the spiral, it is impossible to confirm whether these galaxies are interacting. The elliptical appears undisturbed. The spiral could be disturbed. No star streams are seen. My best guess, based on its poorly defined structure, is that the spiral is closer to us than the elliptical and that these galaxies are not interacting.
