Description

On the night of May 29, 2019, Canon camera in hand, a friend and I drove up Mt. Lemmon, Arizona, to the observatory where we had booked 4 hours of telescope time. The astronomer on duty suggested to us that, before turning our attention to our planned observing/photography targets, we image a supernova that had been discovered on May 1 in Canes Venatici, and was still very prominent. We did so, taking about 2 dozen 60-second images (the practical maximum for that telescope’s guidance I think), with the result that you easily see supernova 2019 EIN in galaxy NGC 5353.

Besides the lucky break of imaging a supernova on a clear night with an excellent telescope, it turned out to be a very nice galaxy cluster. The pretty barred spiral up top is NGC 5350, and as well as our supernova host lenticular 5353, we have three other lenticulars: Just above is NGC 5354; NGC 5355 to the northwest; and NGC 5358 to the left. And even better, if you look closely you can also see numerous dim, distant galaxies in the background.
