Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is an obscure galaxy cluster called USGC S171.  It is located in the constellation of Crater at a declination of -10 degrees, just west of the lightly less obscure galaxy cluster Abell 1332.

Please note that the annotations of the Astrobin mouseover are incorrect and should be ignored.

Like many of these galaxy “clusters”, these galaxies are wide spread, ranging from 200 to 300 million light years away.  They are generally too far apart from each other to be interacting.

The brightest and largest galaxy in the image is NGC 3721, a magnitude 14.5 lenticular galaxy just right of image center.  It is located 260 million light years away, spans 1.1 arc-minutes, and has a diameter of 90,000 light years.  The galaxy immediately below NGC 3721 is the near edge-on galaxy MCG-01-30-004, which looks like it is interacting but is actually 30 million light years further away.
