Description

LDN 673 is located in the constellation Aquila. This dark nebula is at a distance of about 600 light years. Expansive molecular clouds in the Aquila rift make the distant stars appear reddish, while the very dense LDN 673 nebula completely blocks the starlight.

As very often in dark nebulae, star formation is underway in LDN 673, as evidenced by the Herbig-Haro object HH32.

Right of center is GD 218, a small blue star moving very fast. This is a "white dwarf", a relatively low-mass star at the end of its life. Presumably such stars form from red giants, which eject their outer envelope, leaving the hot core. The high temperature is responsible for the color - white to blue - the small surface for the low luminosity. Its B-V index is 0.03, which fits very well to the blue color. The name is therefore somewhat misleading.
