Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a tiny pair of spiral galaxies located in the constellation of Canes Venatici at a declination of +37 degrees. This is one of the smallest Arp objects in our apparent view, spanning about 30 arc-seconds (smaller than Jupiter).

The grand design spiral galaxy is IC 4271. This magnitude 16 object is one of the furthest Arp objects away, at 800 million light years. It has a Milky Way like diameter of 130,000 light years.

No distance information is available for the second galaxy. Since I don’t see any obvious signs of disturbance, I assume that these 2 are not close enough to be interacting. It is not clear to me which of these 2 is the closer galaxy.

This galaxy was classified by Dr. Arp into the category of Spiral Galaxies with Low Surface Brightness Companions on Arms. As I stated above, I don’t believe that these galaxies are companions. I am disappointed in the quality of the Arp image, which looks to me like it has artifacts.
