Description

This emission nebula is located 5000 light years away in the constellation of Monoceros at a declination of +2 degrees.  It spans about 0.5 degrees, equal to the size of our full moon.  The nebula has a width of 40 light years and is located 2 degrees south of the much brighter Rosette Nebula.

Despite being a nice object in full narrowband, there are only a couple of full narrowband images of this object on Astrobin.  My favorite part is the blue bow shock wave to the right of the central bright ionizing star HD 46573.

Subtle but fascinating to me is the bright SII region, seen in ruby red, surrounding the bright star HD 47220 on the left side of the image.
