Two galaxies in collision. NGC 3226, the smaller galaxy to the left of the larger NGC 3227. Perhaps you can see a faint, somewhat arcuate, very faint whisp to the left of the two galaxies. (It is just above the noise level and may not be visible on many monitors.) I would suspect that these two have made more than one pass around their common gravitational center, probably in elliptical orbits, and in the process of a close pass, a whisp of stars was dragged out of one of them to form this arcuate cloud. As the orbits decay, the two become closer together and now share stars. The merging of the two seems close at hand. In such mergers or near passes, astronomers believe that few, if any, star collisions actually occur. But it appears that star-burst activity has been induced in NGC 3227 at least. Can you imagine what it must be like to live on a star positioned between the two galactic centers? There must be fantastic night skies!

Hope you enjoy this view from afar,
Alex Woronow
