Description

This object is a rarely imaged very faint low surface brightness galaxy located 30 million light years away in the constellation of Cetus at a declination of -23 degrees. The galaxy spans 9 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 80,000 light years.

Low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies emit much less light per area than normal galaxies. Their luminosities are only a few percent higher than the sky background. Although relatively few have been identified because they are hard to detect, it is believed that LSB galaxies may account for up to one-half of all galaxies. LSB galaxies come in wide range of sizes, but the common aspect to these galaxies is that they are all extremely blue and extremely faint.

This galaxy has an interesting look, with little structure, a faint core area, and numerous blue star clusters. The galaxy is semi-transparent, with at least 4 background galaxies visible through its disk.
