Description

f3.5, 35mm, iso 800, 145x300sec, 30 flats, 30 flat darks, 30 bias, 30 darks

Spanning some 41 x 46 degrees, it’s hard to convey the scale of the Gum12a and 12b (12b being the brighter portion of the lower right arc).

This vast cloud of ionised hydrogen straddles the southern sky's Milky way between the constellations Puppis and Carina.

Imaged here in bicolour, using an STC Astro Duoband filter (Ha and OIII) on an astromodified mirrorless camera

The entire Vela supernova remnant is just to the right of centre (and a very tiny Pencil Nebula can be seen).

To try to illustrate the apparent angular diameter of Gum 12a and 12b, I’ve included a second, composited image, containing the gibbous moon shot with the same system and focal length on the same night.
