Description

Messier 40 is an optical double star approximately 500 light years from Earth. It is located in the constellation Ursa Major and was discovered by Charles Messier in 1764. However, a German astronomer, Friedrich August Theodor Winnecke, came upon this same pair in 1863 and included it in the Winnecke Catalogue of Double Stars as number 4 (WNC 4).
