Description

Late autumn brings a target into an appropriate sky position that I have been wanting to image for a while. A segment of Markarians Chain - a short section of a 'necklace' of galaxies that form part of the Virgo Cluster. Named after the famous Armenian astrophysicist Benjamin Markarian who discovered their common motion. The area of view is around 1 degree by 0.6 degrees.

The two bright circular-looking and featureless elliptical galaxies are Messier 84 and Messier 86. The galaxies at bottom left form an interacting pair (NGC4435 and NGC4438). They are named "The Eyes" as they look like a pair of eyes in a small telescope. Clouds of material (gas, dust and stars) are being ripped from NGC4438 by the gravitational pull of NGC4435. A pair of lenticular galaxies lie either side of the central elliptical giant Messier 86.

Most of these more prominant galaxies are around 40-65 million light years away.
