The area around elliptical galaxy NGC 474, mid left, with NGC 470 upper mid, and NGC 467 at upper right. My goal was to see if I could capture the intricate density waves surrounding NGC 474, as shown in a dramatic image from the Canada-France Hawaii telescope, the 3.6 meter optical/infrared instrument atop Mauna Kea. The waves are very faint, but I was able to record some of the more pronounced features.

Date: Nov 1-3, 2019

Location: Blue Mountain Vista Observatories,New Ringgold PA

Optics: Celestron EdgeHD 1100 on Paramount MX

Camera: Sbig STL-11000 for RGB

Optics: Starizona Hyperion f/8 12.5 inch, FL 2540 mm on Paramount ME

Camera: Apogee U8300 for Lum

Guiding: ST-402 on Innovations Foresight On-Axis Guider and STL-11000 Self guiding

Exposure: LRGB: L:43x10 R:20x7 min, G:20x7 min, B:20x7 min for a total of 21.3 hrs (103 subs at avg of 746 sec)

Processing: Image acquisition using CCD Autopilot. Initial processing was done using Maxim DL with subsequent processing with Photoshop.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
