Description

This object is a rarely imaged face-on spiral galaxy located 70 million light years away in the constellation of Sculptor at a declination of -31 degrees. The galaxy spans 3 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 60,000 light years.

Little information exists on this object, which is surprising given the uniqueness of this galaxy's appearance. The core is a bar that has interesting detailed structure within, along with the hint of a dark lane. Bright star clusters are seen along the arms. Most intriguing is the faint star stream which spirals out twice as far from the core as the arms.

The galaxy looks disturbed, with arms that split and an overall asymmetric shape. There appears to be a small galaxy below the object, which could be causing the disturbance of the main galaxy. This small galaxy is LEDA 708504, a low surface brightness galaxy which is also 70 million light years away from us, the same distance as the subject galaxy.
