Description

The Fireworks Galaxy`s name arises from a record number of supernovas--9 in the last century. With a diameter of 75,000 light-years, it is smaller than our own galaxy, just slightly bigger than M33. While relatively close to us, around 20 million light years, the Fireworks is not part of our local group of galaxies, and is obscured by gas and dust in our own galaxy. The odd blue circular region at the right, slightly below centre, is known as Hodge`s Complex, which may be a dwarf galaxy that is passing in front of the disk.
