Description

This obscure object is a pair of colliding galaxies located almost a half billion light years away in the constellation of Leo Minor at a declination of +30 degrees. This galaxy pair spans almost 3 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual span of 400,000 light years. These are two large galaxies in the midst of a merger.

The spiral galaxy at the center is UGC 5984, while the elliptical galaxy slightly above and left is MCG+05-26-025. Dr. Arp put this pair in his category of "Elliptical galaxies connected to spiral galaxies". UGC 5984 is a Seyfert galaxy, having an active nucleus, which is not unusual in pairs of interacting galaxies since the gravitational interaction allows the larger galaxy's central black hole to be fed.

I love star streams and this object has some interesting ones. The spiral galaxy appears blue with many star clusters as the interaction has initiated a tremendous amount of recent star formation. I like the apparent double arm section just below the core.
