Description

This object is a pair of galaxies located 70 million light years away in the constellation of Ursa Major at a declination of +62 degrees. NGC 4041 is on the left and NGC 4036 is on the right. I don't see much disturbance from gravitation interaction in either galaxy, so I question whether they are actually a similar distance away from us.

NGC 4036 spans almost 3 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 60,000 light years. This is a 10.3 magnitude lenticular galaxy but, unlike many such galaxies, shows some detail in the inner region including the presence of a bar and a few dark dust regions. This despite the fact that it is almost edge-on, inclined at an 18 degree angle.

NGC 4041 is a slightly smaller magnitude 10.8 face-on spiral galaxy with interesting coloration and a bit of a disorganized look to its disk. The arms are structured but faint, and the inner region is very bright with quite a bit of detail.

The galaxy at the left edge is UGC 7009, viewed almost edge-on with an interesting wavy structure.
