Description

Edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 4216 is one of the largest and brightest spiral galaxies of the Virgo Cluster at a distance of some 40 million light-years and 100,000 light-years across, about the size of our own Milky Way. Found in the dense Virgo Galaxy Cluster, NGC 4216 is centered in this telescopic portrait flanked by fellow Virgo cluster members NGC 4206 (top right) and NGC 4222(bottom left). In fact, the galaxy's disk shows pillar-like structures that may have been caused by interactions with the intracluster medium of Virgo and/or with nearby galaxies. Like most spiral galaxies of this cluster shows a deficiency of neutral hydrogen that's concentrated within the galaxy's optical disk and has a low surface density for a galaxy of its type. The entire group of galaxies is moving away from us, but NGC 4216 is moving towards us with respect to other group members
