Description

Merry Christmas everyone. Here's my photograph of the great Andromeda Galaxy that I started on December 20th. I took 65 images through a luminance filter, then 50 exposures each through red, green and blue filters and combined them into the full-color RGB image seen here. (since my camera is monochrome, this is how I create color images).

I still want to record some very faint light of ionized hydrogen, though a very narrow band H-Aplha filter which will add color to the gaseous nebula within this distant galaxy. I can do that later, and add it in once I have those images.

Andromeda is the nearest major galaxy to turn own galaxy - the Milky Way. The mass of the Andromeda Galaxy is of the same order of magnitude as that of the Milky Way, at a trillion solar masses. Andromeda has a diameter of about 220,000 light-years, making it the largest member (in size) of the Local Group. The number of stars contained within the galaxy is estimated at one trillion, roughly twice the number estimated for the Milky Way. On a side note: Our Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies are expected to collide in around 4.5 billion years, merging to form a giant elliptical galaxy.

Note: As Andromeda lies at 2 1/2 million light years away, when the light left Andromeda on the way to my camera, early humanoids (Homo Habilis) were just starting to use flaked tools. That's how long it took the light to reach us!
