Description

This object is located 190 million light years away in the constellation of Lynx at a declination of +35 degrees. This object spans 45 arc-seconds in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 45,000 light years.

This appears to be a late stage galaxy merger to me. The structure is mesmerizing. A core is not apparent. Bright star streams twist in odd ways, looking like two intertwined cobra snakes inside of a snow globe star stream halo. I cannot imagine how such a structure might have evolved.

I certainly would have included NGC 2415 in a collection of peculiar galaxies, so why Dr. Arp did not include it is beyond me. This will be one of the objects I image once I receive my allocation of time for the Hubble.

A faint spiral galaxy is seen immediately to the right. No distance information is available for it, but a star stream extends towards NGC 2415. I think these 2 objects are interacting.
