Description

This planetary nebula is located 3600 light years away in the constellation of Pyxis at a declination of -21 degrees.  It is magnitude 14 and spans 6 arc-minutes in our apparent view.

The outer rim is stronger in HII while the inner section is stronger in OIII.  The 18.2 magnitude blue progenitor star is identified with an arrow in the mouseover view.  Thank you to Dana Patchick for finding information on this object.

Like many PN, I have a hard time understanding exactly what we are looking at here.  My best guess is that we have a side-on view of the central torus region, and that the PN is bi-polar with the major axis running from lower left to upper right.  This would explain why the HII region is brighter in the upper left  and lower right areas, where we are looking at the thickest parts of the torus from our perspective.  Both end lobes of the bi-polar PN have been blown out and are no longer visible.
