Description

The open star clusters NGC 869 and NGC 884 form the famous Double Cluster in Perseus. It was first cataloged by the Greek astronomer Hipparcos in 130 B.C. For unknown reasons, Messier did not include the Double Cluster in his famous catalogue.

Both clusters are also blue-shifted, with NGC 869 approaching Earth at a speed of 22 km/s and NGC 884 approaching at a similar speed of 21 km/s.
