Description

Captured over 2 nights mid-Jan 2022.
Low data, skyglow due to Moon's presence.
Lum, G, and B were so weak that I was questioning the pointing accuracy... Fortunately Ha confirmed I was spot on.
  • B: 16x10 min
  • G: 16x10 min
  • R: 17x10 min
  • L: 24x10 min
  • Ha:: 16x10 min

L was dropped in the processing - too noisy, used Ha for luminance.

Processing steps described below, also in French further down.

Image was processed several times, to obtain a slightly more colorful result despite the low SNR in the L,R, G and B channels.

Final processing according to these steps:
  • * Calibration with BPP, after having eliminated the poor subs
  • * Dynamic crop on stacked images, on each channel

  • RGB:
  • RGB combination with ChannelCombination
  • DBE on RGB, by choosing a sky background area from the Ha image
  • Color calibration with PCC, using the same sky background area to neutralize it
  • Switch to RGB mode (RGBWS)
  • SCNR on RGB to eliminate the green dominance (color noise)
  • Noise reduction rather aggressive on RGB, because of the low signal (MMT with a luminance mask)

    [*]

  • RGB stretch:
    • Linear RGB duplication
    • Simple histogram editing on the duplicate (HT)
    • StarMask on this one (protection of all but the big stars) with Convolution to smooth it out
    • MaskedStretch on original RGB
    • PixelMath to copy RGB-maskedStretched --> RGB-HT protected by the mask
    • --> stars take an easier shape to color and their size is reduced

    [*]

  • Ha and L:
  • DBE on both --> Drop L: signal too weak to get anything more out of it than the Ha channel provides; continue with Ha alone which will serve as luminance

    [*][*]

  • Ha:
  • Linear noise reduction (MMT with luminance mask)
  • Useless deconvolution (tested then abandoned)
  • Histogram stretch: same approach as for RGB, see above ^

    [*][*]

  • RGB+Ha:
  • Ha is used for the luminance layer
  • Ha+RGB combination: ChannelCombination, HSI model, and use of Ha in channel I (intensity) - allows to preserve colors on stars
  • Non-linear noise reduction on Ha-RGB with MMT again (protected by luminance mask)
  • Final reduction of stars with EzScript, Adam Block method (Starnet V2 used)
  • --> The sky background is VERY noisy (colors):
    • Construction of a mask covering the nebula and the stars
    • RangeMask for the nebula
    • StarMask to select only the biggest stars
    • Addition of the two with PixelMath
    • Application of the inverted mask on Ha-RGB
    • Reduced saturation of the sky background (CS)

    [*][*]
  • Saving the project and the final image as a 16-bit TIFF

    [*][*]
  1. Lightroom:
  2. Final adjustments: colors, black point, slight reduction of noise still present, improvement of details
  3. [*]

...And that's it!

  27. [*]
  28. Lightroom:
  29. Ajustements finaux: couleurs, point noir, légère réduction du bruit encore présent, amélioration des détails

...Et voilà!

Title: With a bit more color this time...

This image is a real challenge for me - the signal is so weak that I could only see the colors appear after combining the RGB with the (Ha) Luminance channel. I hope I was able to make the colors and the delicate stellar dust clouds more apparent with this attempt.
