Description

Here is a deep, L filtered image, of the Virgo supercluster. It is the nearest cluster to the milky way, and indeed our local group is part of the Virgo Cluster. The dominant member is the giant elliptical galaxy, M87. It is a strong radio source from electron spiralling around magnetic field lines, it has a jet eminanting from the supermasive black hole at the centre. This was famously imaged just last year by the Event Horizon team. The jet is visible on an unstretched image.

This widefield shows the cluster and the 1000's of background galaxies. I think my favourute galaxy is the in the centre: NGC 4438. This is clearly a tidally disrupted galaxy due to gravitational interaction with its neighbour. This has triggered star formations, and a spectrum shows emission lines in Ha and O3, which as a nebula fan I find very interesting.

Please have a look at the annotated version, as solved by pixinsight, and a closeup of the jet.

Please excuse the semicircular arcs, these are reflections from the reducer I think.

Also note that this was taken under the very dark skies at my remote observatory and as a result I think there is some faint nebulosity in the field.
