Description

This poorly known and scarcely observed open cluster in Lyra is object 101 in the All-Sky Compiled Catalogue (ASCC). Located ESE of delta Lyrae, it can be found about one degree east of 5th magnitude iota Lyrae. Visual observers should use relatively low power since ASCC 101 spans approximately 45', and a keen eye may detect approximately 30-40 members ranging from 7th to 10th magnitude scattered across this area.

The attached image is oriented with north to the right and west up, thus the brightest star, HD 179782, is located to the SW (upper right) and shines at magnitude 6.9 from within a trapezoidal arrangement of dimmer stars. A distinct grouping of members extends to the NE (lower left), with two other prominent outliers to the SE (lower right). Overall, a beautiful open cluster somewhat detached from the crowded background of Milky Way stars.

If you are looking for this cluster in your star atlas, it can be found at RA 19h 13m 37s, Dec +36° 19' 48", but it may not be labeled. I have only found it plotted in the Interstellarum Deep-Sky Atlas as ASCC 101. I cannot find much published information on ASCC 101, but I would classify it as a Trumpler III 3 p open cluster.
