Description

This object is an extragalactic globular cluster located 80,000 light years away in the constellation of Sagittarius at a declination of -35 degrees.  This magnitude 12 cluster spans 1 arc-minute in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 25 light years.

The French-Armenian astronomer Agop Terzan discovered 11 faint globular clusters in the 1960s.  Terzan 7 is the brightest of this faint clusters.  At 8 billion years, Terzan 7 is very young for a globular cluster and is believed to be the result of the Milky Way’s destruction and assimilation of the nearby Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy.
