Description

The Bad Seeing Chain

How Sharpening Can Increase Bad Seeing.

First of all: I love sharp images and live in a region where good seeing is extremely rare.

I show here what this has to do with each other.

The critical and qualified feedback from the many experienced colleagues here at astrobin (many thanks to Patrick and Robert, among others) showed me that I tend to exaggerate when sharpening.

Using the example of my last picture (https://www.astrobin.com/j3qheu/0/), I wanted to know what I was doing wrong or where the causes of double crater rims are in this picture. Incidentally, the crater that I looked at is J. Herschel F in the picture above.

So I took a closer look at the different processing stages of my process from the raw footage (top left in the picture) to the final image (bottom right in the picture above). At the beginning, I suspected that the effect of double crater rims was due to the sharpening algorithm itself. But that was not true. In fact, the problem starts with the raw material. The distortions in the individual images caused by the seeing are not 100% compensated by the stacking software. The resulting ghosting or ghosting parts are almost not noticeable after stacking. In addition, ghosting occur only selectively and not evenly distributed over the entire image. So subsequent sharpening not only sharpens the actual edges of a crater rim, but also the ghost edges caused by poor seeing. So far it was not clear to me.

I have to try whether another stacking software or just different settings would give better results with bad raw material. Maybe I should just listen to the friends at astrobin and sharpen less.

Conclusion: Sharpening is easy with good seeing ...

hahahahaha
