Description

This nightscape picture was taken near Jasper, within the Canadian Rocky Mountains in Alberta, Canada. Images of the Milky Way were taken while facing southwest towards Whistlers Peak. The image was taken on an opportunity basis in between moving clouds at the end of the night. Although much is done in the Jasper area to minimize light pollution, the exact position and direction of the camera made street lights a bit of an issue in this particular case.

In addition to the Milky Way, Messier 16 and Messier 17 are visible closer to the horizon.  An annotated version of the image is in the history.

Images were taken using Nikon D750 DLSR (unmodified) fitted with a Rokinon 24mm f/1.4 lens, on a fixed tripod. The lens appeared to be a ‘bad copy' with a decentered lens; so I felt I would be lucky to get any image in a reasonable state.

Exposure details: 20x7 seconds. 24mm, f/2.8, ISO 3200
