Description

This is a group of galaxies in the constellation of Leo at a declination of +17 degrees.

The largest and brightest galaxy is NGC 2943, the yellow elliptical galaxy at the center of the image. This galaxy is 380 million light years away.  It spans 3 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a massive diameter.  The outer extend of the galaxy boundary is hard to determine – the total diameter is somewhere between 300,000 and 400,000 light years.

Many of the galaxies around it are about the same distance away.  The exception is NGC 2933, the pair of blue connected galaxies at the right side of the image.  This object is 200 million light years away and is a total of 90,000 light years long.

Many interesting galaxy shapes can be seen throughout the field.  The most interesting to me is MCG+03-25-012, towards the upper left, which look like a double star in front of a distant disturbed galaxy.

I will not be posting any more images this week.  I will be visiting family so I have decided to put my beloved hobby aside for a few days.  I am hoping that the sky will still be here upon my return.
