Description

This 2 panel mosaic (1.5 hrs of 180s subs per panel) shows a very busy region in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The star of this image is the spectacular Tarantula Nebula (NGC 2070, dominating the right of the image), which is 160,000 light years away. Even from this vast distance, its luminosity is so great that if it was close to Earth as Orion Nebula, it would cast visible shadows at night. There are a lot of subjects in this frame that could be imaged individually. There are emission nebulae, globular clusters & open clusters scattered throughout. Of particular note is the N70 'super bubble' (bottom from middle), which according to ESO (European Southern Observatory), created by winds from hot, massive stars and supernova explosions and the interior is filled with tenuous, hot expanding gas (300 light-years in diameter).
