Description

This is the second leg of the Viltrox 56mm f/1.4 prime test under the stars. Closing down the lens to f/2.0 seems a sure fire way to improve performance, does it not? Not always and always with some catches. Here is that focusing is considerably trickier than at f/1.4 and took me a while to get the hang of it.Leaving at the same focus posiiton of f/1.4 is a no-no proposition, I can gurantee that! Going to performances, there is a noticeable decrease of the magnitude of the off-xis coma but not that much of the field curvature. Now the maximum circle is nearly completely usable, with just a hint of come at the very ends. On axis and nearby the performance is, let's say, stellar; the average FWHM is less than 2 pixels and stays that way for 2/3 of the maximum circle diameter eventually tapering up to 3 pixels which still make the image perfectly useable in my view. One thing that stepping down the lens does not do much of is reducing the LCA, which is still visible albeit reduced in magnitude with respect to the f/1.4 shots. When all is said and done I'll probably use this lens at f/2 despite the loss of light on most targets, trading exposure length (3x longer) for better field performances. But I'll be sorely tempted to go down to f/1.4 for smaller targets.
