Description

This is an image of the galaxy NGC 660 and a wider field showing background galaxies. NGC 660, SB(s)d pec, is a peculiar galaxy having what appears to be two galactic planes - each with dust lanes. It has been described by some as having a polar ring. This ring feature is more easily seen in the full resolution image.  It is about 43 million light years distant.  Some of the smaller nearby galaxies are LEDA 6368, UGC 1200, UGC 1211, and IC 148. There are various Quasars  visible in this image - the greatest lookback time is 11.56 billion light years with a redshift of 3.018 These objects, information, and some of the brighter stars are identified in the annotated image.
