Description

NGC 6940 is a pretty open cluster in the constellation Vulpecula. It's old for an open cluster - nearly a billion years old. It's about 2500 light years away.

The field includes several "blue-ish" stars that are not actually part of the cluster - they are too young. The brightest cluster member is FG Vulpeculae, the bright red star in the center - it's a red giant and a variable with a period of about 80 days.

This image was taken with my trusty AT6RC, but I've started working with a 0.75x focal reducer (The GSO/TPO model). I'm struggling with a bit of chromatic aberration that I think results from a tilt in the optical train, but I'm not sure where. I worked on the alignment of the camera assembly to the focuser with maybe some improvement. I'm starting to suspect that the glass itself may be slightly tilted wrt the sensor. Perfectionist tendencies aside it doesn't ruin the image and I'm pretty happy with this result.
