Description

Took the opportunity to tick off another Messier object before xmas but had not published due to lack of all the necessary calibration frames.

M3 is a globular cluster situated in the constellation of Canes Venatici some 33,000 light years from my backgarden and is 12 billion years old, so really quite a relic of the universe. It contains stars all along the colour magnitude diagram with the majority in the main sequence stage but also contains some blue stragglers (not evident in my image) - very blue and large. It is said that these blue stragglers should actually have died based on the age of the cluster but one hypothesis is that sets of 2 smaller blue stars have joined to form the larger blue.
