Description

I added NGC3718 on my "to do" list some time ago as it fascinated me with its form and details. I had a two night imaging window and wanted to dedicate it to an interesting and challenging target. And that target became NGC 3718 in Ursa Major.

Looking at the finished image - I like what I see. I am glad that I managed to take it with my small Celestron C6 under the city skies.

I found the following information for this object on the site of NASA - NGC 3718 is a highly disturbed spiral galaxy with an unusual, warped shape that looks a bit like a plump letter “s”  from Earth, with a thin thread of dark dust snaking through it. NGC 3718, also called Arp 214, is thought to get its unusual shape from gravitational interaction with nearby galaxy NGC 3729, another spiral galaxy located approximately 150,000 light-years away.

Here is what Sky Safari has to say for this object:
- distance from Earth - 58 Million light years;
- apparent size - 4.7x2.3 archmin;
- physical diameter - 79 369 light years;

The information in Sky Safari about NGC 3729 is the following:
- distance from Earth - 69 Million light years;
- apparent size - 2.9 x 2.1 archmin;
- physical diameter - 57 683 light years;

If NGC 3718 is 58 Mly from us and NGC 3719 is 69 Mly from us then I don't know how the information from the site of NASA can be correct (that the two galaxies are 150 000 light years apart).

Ivan
