Description

This Astrobin Debut Object, also known as NGC 2881, is a pair of galaxies located 240 million light years away in the constellation of Hydra at a declination of -12 degrees. Each galaxy spans about 45 arc-seconds in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 50,000 light years. This magnitude 14 object was classified by Dr. Arp into the category of Double Galaxies – Interacting.

These galaxies are so small and distant that it is hard to see what is happening here. I think they are interacting, because of my perception of some disturbance, star streams, and star formation, but they could simply be superimposed as well. Dr. Arp did not add any notes to this entry to explain his placement of this object into the “Double Galaxies – Interacting” category vs. simply his “Double Galaxies” category, which is where I would have placed it.
