Description

This object, also known as Collinder 72, is an open star cluster located 1500 light years away in the constellation of Orion at a declination of -6 degrees. The cluster spans 15 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 7 light years.

This is an object that everyone sees, yet nobody sees. It is the bright star cluster next to M42, the Orion Nebula, so it should be easy to see. And it is. But M42 is so magnificent that it commands all of the attention away from this beautiful bright open cluster.

The "star" of this cluster is Iota Orionis, the brightest star in Orion's Sword at a magnitude of 2.7. Faintly visible above this star, towards the top of the image, is the outer edge of the Orion Nebula itself. Iota Orionis, also known as Struve 752, is one of 3 bright double stars in this image. The other two are Struve 747, the bright bluish pair of 5th magnitude stars at the center of the image, and Struve 745, the pair of 9th magnitude stars just to the right of center.

In fact, Iota Orionis is at least a triple star system. I could not see a triple star in my processed image, but when I backed off on the stretching of the image, the third star popped into view. It is only 10 arc-seconds away from the main star. I attached an image of it above.
