Description

The Veil Nebula is a supernova remnant, showing the shock wave traveling through the interstellar medium from a star that exploded approximately 15,000 years ago. It is located in the constellation Cygnus (the Swan). Given its distance of roughly 770 parsecs (2,500 light years), the explosion itself would have appeared to be as bright as the crescent Moon.

This image includes several different sections of the Veil Nebula including the Witch's Broom (upper portion of the image), Pickering's Triangle (middle left), and NGC 6974 (lower left knot of gas). This image is a four panel mosaic covering an area of sky roughly six times larger than the full moon. A 3 nanometer bandpass filter (narrowband) was used to capture this monochrome image in Hydrogen-Alpha light
