Description

Here we have a crack at NGC 4762  and NGC 4754, a visual pair of galaxies in Virgo.

NGC4762 is an unusual galaxy that was classified by Stephen James O'Mara in his book The Secret Deep (2011), as an "Armless Edge-On Lenticular galaxy (SO1)".  He also tagged it with the moniker of The Paper Kite Galaxy which came from a description made by Admiral William Henry Smyth in his, The Bedford Catalog, From a Cycle of Celestial Objects (1844).

This galaxy is quite large at about 170,000 ly in diameter and lies at a distance of some 65 million ly.  It is almost exactly oriented to us in an edge-on position and is, in some circles, called the flattest galaxy in the universe.

NGC4754 lies much closer to us at about 50 million ly and a spiral of about 70,000 ly in diameter.

I find NGC 4762 to be interesting in that there does not appear to be any color that can be pulled from this.  It is white...  And flat.

I would have done more integration but a mount issue has been plaguing me.  I believe I have it sorted, it was a cable.

With regard to the processing, the idea was to keep things simple while gaining more experience with the GHS script.  I wanted to keep the color saturation very conservative as well.  Additionally, there really are a multitude of small background galaxies in this field that I wanted to preserve.  An interesting spot to look at is at the lower right of NGC4762, there are a number of very nice and distant spirals to see.

This was really an enjoyable project and I hope you like the result!

CS and good health...
