Description

This object is a pair of interacting galaxies located 100 million light years away in the constellation of Canes Venatici at a declination of +44 degrees.

NGC 5297 is the large barred spiral galaxy, which spans 5 arc-minutes in our apparent view corresponding to a diameter of 150,000 light years. The structure is tough to see since it is almost edge-on, but bright star clusters and a long disturbed upper arm are evident. The bright foreground 9.4 magnitude star is BD+44 2300.

NGC 5296 is a smaller lenticular galaxy. A faint star stream is seen connecting this galaxy with its companion, at an orthogonal angle to that of NGC 5297. The small white object just above NGC 5296 is a small distant unrelated galaxy, LEDA 2230517.
