Description

The Atoms for Peace Galaxy, NGC 7252, was named after a speech by Dwight D. Eisenhower. It is actually a pair of galaxies colliding with each other, Arp 226, forming a crazy shape that somewhat resembles the classical view of electrons in orbit around an atomic nucleus. My image doesn't really show much of this - I just wanted to see what I'd get if I gave it a quick attempt. Out of the faintness of the details, I had to be very aggressive with the processing of this image. But if you look really really closely, you might be able to see just the vaguest wisp of the arms stretching out to the left and to the upper right of the galaxy. I can see them, can you? This galaxy is going to require much more effort to get a good image. Challenge accepted!
