Description

M19 is a quite interesting globular cluster because it is the most oblate one. However it seems that it is more a visual effect rather than a real one. There is an absorption of visible light on the left side due to some dark clouds, giving the impression of this asymmetry regarding a more conventional spherical globular cluster. There is an article regarding flattering effect on these objects by S. van den Bergh in Astron. Journ. 135 (5) 1730 - 1737. It seems that infrared images tell a different story.

Anyway, is quite dense and rich in colourful stars.
