Description

NGC 3198 (Herschel 146) is a barred spiral galaxy around 50 million light years away in the constellation of Ursa Major. It is one of the 'Rosse Spirals', having been declared to be 'spiral or curvilinear in nature' by William Parsons, Third Earl of Rosse (Observations of the Nebula, June 1850). Although I have not found a definitive source for this, it seems likely that it was first observed through Rosse's 6 foot mirror - the 'Leviathan of Parsonstown', then the world's largest telescope.

NGC 3198 was photographed between 16 March and 8 April 2021.
