Description

Another shot from my new Rokinon 135mm f/2 lens -- the Seagull Nebula!

Also known by its catalog number IC 2177, the Seagull is a region of glowing hydrogen gas, energized by hot, young stars born within to glow that nice deep red color. There is also a bit of glowing oxygen gas, as well as a few bits of dark nebula, or light-absorbing molecular dust. It's located about 3,600 lightyears away between the constellations of Monoceros and Canis Major, just west of constellation Orion.

This wide shot also nabs a few other interesting objects. Over in the upper right is the oxygen-rich teal glow of the nebula known as Thor's Helmet, which I'm currently imaging on my higher-magnification 8" SCTright now. The little star cluster at about the 4 o'clock position is NGC 2353, which is a dim open cluster of about 30 stars. At about the 7 o'clock position is another, more prominent open cluster -- M50, which is about 12 lightyears in diameter.

The Seagull Nebula was pretty close to the high-light-pollution background I have here -- I was able to pull it out thanks to the StarNet algorithm now included in PixInsight (although it can be run standalone as well), which separated the stars out of the rest of the image and let me bring up the nebula without blowing out the stars. What a tool!
