Description

NGC 5128, the Centuarus A galaxy. As Southern Hemisphere imaging goes, this probably qualifies as the same old stuff, but I'm hooked on peculiarly shaped galaxies and this is one of the biggest and brightest in the night sky. The galaxy displays a misshapen dust lane as viewed edge-on from earth. It is illuminated from behind by the glow of a very active core. Profession astronomers have studied this target in great detail. Examination outside the visible light range even has revealed jets emanating from the core perpendicular to the plane of the visible dust lane.
