Description

This planetary nebula is located 5000 light years away in the constellation of Monoceros at a declination of -3 degrees.  It is a magnitude 17 PN which spans 1.4 arc-minutes in our apparent view, corresponding to a diameter of 2 light years.  It is amazing to me how many PN are consistently around this 2 light year size.

Like many PN, the outer rim is stronger in HII while the inner section is stronger in OIII. The elliptical PN is a bit distorted, as if it was being pinched a bit at the 5 and 11 o’clock positions.  The rim is slightly brighter and thinner at these spots.  We could be looking at a slightly bipolar PN extending from lower left to upper right, with the bright rim areas being the side-on view of the constraining torus area.

There are several faint stars in the central region but none are obviously the progenitor star.
