Description

This little gem is called the Little Dumbbell Nebula (M76 or NGC 650/651), and is sometimes known as the Barbell Nebula or the Cork Nebula. I'm surprised that this is not imaged more as it is beautiful. It is a planetary nebula in the constellation Perseus, at a distances of 2,500 light-years from Earth. A planetary nebula is an emission nebula consisting of an expanding, glowing shell of ionized gas ejected from red giant stars late in their lives.

This is a bi-color narrowband image, where hydrogen-alpha is red, and oxygen is used for green and blue.
