Description

Arp 222 in Aquarius is a 'peculiar' SAB(s)a pec galaxy, which contains two nuclei, each with its own supermassive black hole! Its extremely odd morphology is believed to be the result of a collision with a second galaxy, perhaps 1 billion years ago. At a distance of 76,000,000 light-years, it was discovered by William Herschel in 1785. Many thanks go out to my collaborator and friend, Mike Selby, who acquired and calibrated this fine data.
