Description

This image captures 2 groups of galaxies located in the constellation of Draco at a declination of +68 degrees.

The largest and brightest galaxy here, at the center of the image, is NGC 6463. This monstrous elliptical is 250,000 light years in diameter. The bright elliptical to its right (NGC 6456) and the lenticular galaxy to the bottom right (LEDA 2701716) are all at the same distance away from us, at just over 0.5 billion light years.

NGC 6463 looks like it has several faint shells, signs of past mergers. Close around it appear to be at least 5 small irregular galaxies, possibly companions in the process of merging with the big elliptical.

The most interesting galaxy in the image is the beautiful double ring galaxy at left, NGC 6470. This galaxy, as well as several others around it, form a second galaxy group that is closer to us at 370 million light years away.
