Description

So I finally was able to get my imaging gear back online, after a bunch of issues, just in time to try for Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) (catchy name, huh 😄). Imaging this object brought on a number of new challenges, as those of you already skilled at these type of captures know about. Using a mono camera did not make things any easier either, and I expect contributed to the less detailed rendition compared to a number of the excellent versions out there. And my orientation ended up almost perfectly wrong, but I did not want to mess with that as I am also in the middle of a large data collect for the Monkey Head Nebula.

Even so, I am happy with this result. I ended up using about an hour's worth of 3 minute images total from 4 filters (LRGB) and then batch star removed the stars and processed the comet and stars separately, before combining them again for the final composite image. I still  have data from another night where I used shorter sub-expsoures so at some point I may try looking at the results with that data too.

I also confess to not really knowing if the orientation of this is correct either, but in any case I think it still shows off decent versions of the ion and dust tails for this amazing object, not soon to return to our night sky.
