Description

Here we have the Question Mark Nebula. Instead of a '?' I often see a skull shape, so I personally call this one the Red Skull. Not sure if that name is taken or not.
This was a bit of an experiment. With my new EQ6 mount going and not having a guider left over for my SkyGuider I decided to try for a wider angle object to use my 135mm Rokinon on unguided. Problem is most of these larger nebula are emission type and benefit from narrowband so I tried this one with my NBZ nebula booster narrowband filter and pushed my luck with 300" subs and shooting the Rok wide open. However the filter itself, attached with step down ring to the front should have the effect of reducing the aperture from f/2 to ~f/2.8.  So this was a compromise, trying to get that faint Ha signal with long exposure but at risk of tracking issues. I had another issue working against me, the self mod I did to my SL1 camera resulted in a bit of sensor tilt, and toward the bottom of this image the stars really went out of focus. I was able to crop the worse parts but didn't want to remove the question mark's dot so trimmed up to that point. At least its something, with minimalist equipment. I hate to waste the new moon phase when I had the tracker sitting there available. While the stars aren't super sharp I am happy there was no trailing issues at 5 minutes unguided.
